By the help of ultra-sensitive accelerometers, it is possible to monitor the natural frequencies of the building under ambient vibration (even there is no perceivable shock or excitation) A modal analysis is conducted. Determination of mode shapes, natural frequencies and damping ratios lead to dynamic identification.
Any major change in this dynamic identity is an indicator of structural damage or loss int the rigidity. Just after an earthquake or another destructive shock, in a few minutes, the post-event values of the structural identity are compared with the former ones and input to the decision support system. Building owners, consultants, managers and engineers get this scientific and numeric data to decide the best action. The structure should be evacuated and further analysis should be conducted if necessary.
