Hospitals are such critical structures that should never unnecessarily stop operations, when pandemic illnesses, in-patients, intensive care units and ongoing surgeries are considered. However, past experiences showed that even a medium-scale earthquake causes panic & chaos in hospitals that lack a functional Structural Health Monitoring system. Patients in risks groups or taking emergency treatments were evacuated without enough information, as well as medical staff experienced fear and lack of concentration for weeks. Now preventing this uncertainty became possible by Structural Health Monitoring solutions.
By health monitoring systems, it is possible to monitor the rigidity, integrity and dynamic behaviour of the structures 24/7, and to create periodical or event-based reports (such as an earthquake) in minutes. Besides, for hospitals with Seismic Isolators, SHMS also measures the isolator displacements & performance; detects if the isolators functioned as expected or not. Furthermore, vibration levels are measured for surgery rooms and rooms which keep sensitive medical equipment.
When an earthquake hits, in a few minutes, the post-event values of the structural identity are compared with the former ones and proceeded as an input to the decision support system, to decide the best action. Also, it becomes possible to get a more detailed damage analysis with further inspections.
TDG delivered Structural Health Monitoring Systems to many city hospitals for 24/7 real-time monitoring in coordination with the Ministry of Health. These systems are specially optimized for hospital and seismic isolator monitoring in combination.
