Historical structures are special cultural assets that shed light on the history. These magnificent but old buildings were built centuries ago with construction techniques and calculations that are generally unknown today. Over time, they have been exposed to strong earthquakes and ageing. In addition, they have reached today by wearing out and getting tired. 


It is important to choose the right timing for the restoration and strengthening activities to be initiated in these structures. For this reason, historical structures are monitored by  Health Monitoring Systems.  In this way, it is possible to monitor many parameters such as acceleration and vibration levels, responses, cracks openings, relative settlement, tilt. Engineering experts, consultants and institutions can conduct analysis with high accuracy to decide when and what kind of strengthening should be conducted, according to the measurement results.





However, construction activities that involve the reinforcement of historical buildings pose great risks. A large part of the structure has to be demolished and rebuilt, which adds a very high risk of instability for a limited time. High vibration construction machines are used during the process, as well. Deep excavation activities to be carried out for soil reinforcement may also temporarily put structures at great risk. Past experience has shown that during this risky construction activity, monitoring the building 24/7 with various sensors, determining threshold values ​​and alarms minimizes construction risks. Temporarily stopping construction activities when the threshold values exceed, analyzing the situation and continuing by taking the necessary measures provides great security against loss of life and property.


TDG has developed optimal, tailored solutions for this monitoring activity, which should operate as a combination of dynamic and static measurements. Again, there is a special settlement tracking solution developed by TDG with tiltmeters to monitor relative settlement. This solution has been successfully operated in the Galataport (Salıpazarı) and Ziraat Bank Historic Building retrofitting business. TDG Structural Health Monitoring Center also includes valuable know-how and experience in this regard.
